The Radion XR30 Blue Gen 5. Radion lights have come a long way since the first LED Generation over 20 years ago. Even though we knew that this was the future the first generation and the second, in our opinion were not as good as other light choices at the time. With the gen 3 launch our opinion changed, we would now choose this light over metal halide, the benchmark for reef lighting so far. The Radion not only grew corals as well but the was a massive saving in electricity.

The Next was the Generation 4.

Another huge step forward in performance easily observed by the increased growth in corals. We actually swapped a display tank over from gen 3 to 4 and the difference was immediate, particularly in the SPS growth.

Now we come to Gen 5

This is a completely new design and is really the first of a new Radion family tree.

You can no longer upgrade your light as with previous models, to move forward the whole design had to change

. The LEDS are no longer clustered but spread over the hole light. Which gives a much better spread of light and hardly any shimmer.

The Ecotech Radion XR30 Blue Gen 5 heatsink.

The new heatsink design is not only incredibly functional, but also very stylish and is anodised in a nice blue colour that can be seen from the side making the light look quite cool. The heat sink is a big improvement from the earlier lights and reduces the need for active cooling. The extra efficiency means the fans run less, and when they do, there is less noise as the air flows more freely.

The biggest improvement in the Radion XR30 Blue Gen 5

This must be the new HEI lenses, Hemispherical Edge Illumination, which according to Ecotech are the most sophisticated lenses in the whole marine light market. HEI lenses distribute the light very evenly and with great colour mixing, with little power loss.

What We Think Of  Ecotech Radion XR30 Blue Gen 5

As yet we do not run this light in store the main reason being is that we have perfectly good gen 4 lights on our main display and to be brutally honest the number of lights that we would have to sell to recoup the initial investment is financially off putting, even though the colour from the Gen 5 is very tempting. It’s a hard world in retail.

However the feedback from our customers with this new Radion gen 5  has been tremendous, the colour’s from the corals just leap out and correspondingly the growth and vitality is in our opinion comparatively second to no other LED coral tank  lighting system.

Equally importantly, the radion lights are used by some of the big names in coral research and propagation such as the Horniman Museum London, where the previous version of this Radion marine tank light has been used to great effect.
