Taxonomy.

Micromussa lordhowensis belongs to the family Lobophylliidae. Its closest relatives within the taxonomy include other species in the Micromussa genus, such as Micromussa amakusensis. These corals share similar morphological traits and environmental preferences.

Distribution.

Orange Micro Acan are found in the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular abundance around the Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Sea, and the reefs surrounding Indonesia, Fiji, and Tonga.

Natural Habitat.

In their natural habitat, Orange Micro Acan are typically found on the lower reef slopes and in reef lagoons, where they can benefit from moderate light levels and gentle water flow. They often inhabit crevices and overhangs, which provide some protection from strong currents and predators.

Symbiotic Relationship.

Orange Micro Acan maintain a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae live within the coral’s tissues and provide nutrients through photosynthesis, which significantly contributes to the coral’s energy needs. Fish often use the complex structure of Acans as cover, although the coral itself does not specifically attract fish for this purpose.

Keeping Orange Micro Acan Healthy.

Orange Micro Acan are considered moderately easy to keep due to their relatively robust nature, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They are relatively resilient but can be sensitive to rapid changes in water parameters. Meaning they should be added to established aquariums. If unsure, feel free to ask us for advice.

They exhibit moderate aggression towards other corals. Particularly at night when they are actively feeding. They can extend their sweeper tentacles to defend their space, so adequate spacing is required to prevent them from stinging neighbouring corals.

Light Level.

Orange Micro Acan are very responsive to light and their appearance alters greatly at different intensities. Different light intensities and different spectrums can cause changes in hues, shades or change the colour entirely.

Placing them in a part of the tank that receives indirect light, or using a light that can be adjusted to medium intensity is ideal. Too much direct light can cause bleaching, while too little light can impede their growth.

Flow Rate.

A moderate flow rate is best for Orange Micro Acan. The flow should be strong enough to keep debris off the polyps but gentle enough to allow them to expand fully and feed. Positioning them in areas of the tank where they receive indirect flow is ideal.

Feeding.

While Orange Micro Acan derive a significant portion of their nutrients from their symbiotic algae, they do benefit from additional feeding. They can be fed small meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.
