Reed Tetra (Hyphessobrycon elachys) is a tiny, delicate shoaling tetra with a slender body and attractive fin pattern, ideal for a peaceful planted nano community.
Appearance and natural habitat
In a settled group the fish spend much of their time together in midwater, with short displays and changes of position giving the aquarium constant movement. Keeping enough of their own kind improves confidence, colour and natural social behaviour.
In the wild, this fish comes from the Paraguay river drainage in South America. It is associated with quiet, plant-rich waters where its small size and delicate build suit dense cover. Matching some of that shelter and maintaining stable water helps the fish settle; use the species-appropriate conditions shown below.
Reed Tetra care
- Adult size: about 2 cm
- Temperature: 24-28°C
- pH: 6.0-7.2
- Temperament: Peaceful community fish
- Group: At least 8; 10 or more is ideal
- Care level: Moderate
Aquarium setup
Keep it in a mature aquarium with fine plants, gentle filtration, subdued areas and very small, calm tank mates. Stable water and careful feeding matter more than a large tank volume.
Use an established filter and introduce the fish only after the aquarium is fully cycled. Regular partial water changes and steady conditions are safer than sudden attempts to adjust pH or hardness.
Feeding and tank mates
Feeding: Use tiny powdered or micro-granulated foods together with cyclops, baby brine shrimp and other suitably small frozen or live foods.
Compatibility: Its small size makes it a poor companion for large or boisterous fish. A generous group helps it settle and display naturally.
Watch the group at feeding time to make sure every fish gets food, particularly when they share the aquarium with faster species. A varied diet, clean water and suitable companions are the best route to strong colour and long-term health.
