Golden Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi (golden form)) is a pale golden colour form of the Cardinal Tetra, retaining the species’ peaceful schooling behaviour and bright reflective stripe.
Appearance and natural habitat
In a settled group the fish spend much of their time together in midwater, with short displays and changes of position giving the aquarium constant movement. Keeping enough of their own kind improves confidence, colour and natural social behaviour.
In the wild, this fish comes from a captive colour form of a species native to the upper Orinoco and Rio Negro systems. It is associated with soft, acidic forest streams shaded by vegetation and coloured by natural tannins. Matching some of that shelter and maintaining stable water helps the fish settle; use the species-appropriate conditions shown below.
Golden Cardinal Tetra care
- Adult size: about 5 cm
- Temperature: 23-29°C
- pH: 4.0-7.0
- Temperament: Peaceful community fish
- Group: At least 8; larger groups look best
- Care level: Easy to moderate
Aquarium setup
Keep the group in a mature planted aquarium with shaded cover, a dark substrate and open swimming space. Stable, clean water and gentle tank mates help the fish settle.
Use an established filter and introduce the fish only after the aquarium is fully cycled. Regular partial water changes and steady conditions are safer than sudden attempts to adjust pH or hardness.
Feeding and tank mates
Feeding: Feed fine quality flakes or micro pellets plus small frozen or live foods such as cyclops, daphnia and brine shrimp.
Compatibility: The golden colour is a captive form; its care is the same as the standard Cardinal Tetra. It should always be kept in a proper group.
Watch the group at feeding time to make sure every fish gets food, particularly when they share the aquarium with faster species. A varied diet, clean water and suitable companions are the best route to strong colour and long-term health.
