Black Emperor Tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri (black form)) is a dark colour form of the Emperor Tetra with blue eyes, elegant fins and a bold presence in a planted community aquarium.
Appearance and natural habitat
In a settled group the fish spend much of their time together in midwater, with short displays and changes of position giving the aquarium constant movement. Keeping enough of their own kind improves confidence, colour and natural social behaviour.
In the wild, this fish comes from the Atrato and San Juan river basins of Colombia. It is associated with slower river margins, tributaries and backwaters with plants, roots and shaded cover. Matching some of that shelter and maintaining stable water helps the fish settle; use the species-appropriate conditions shown below.
Black Emperor Tetra care
- Adult size: up to 5 cm
- Temperature: 23-27°C
- pH: 5.5-7.5
- Temperament: Peaceful community fish
- Group: At least 6, with plenty of structure
- Care level: Easy
Aquarium setup
Use plants, wood and other visual barriers so males can establish small display areas, while leaving open water for swimming. A dark substrate and good lighting bring out the sheen.
Use an established filter and introduce the fish only after the aquarium is fully cycled. Regular partial water changes and steady conditions are safer than sudden attempts to adjust pH or hardness.
Feeding and tank mates
Feeding: Feed quality flakes or micro pellets and supplement with daphnia, brine shrimp and other small frozen foods.
Compatibility: Peaceful with other species, although males may spar among themselves. A structured tank and a sensible group size keep this behaviour manageable.
Watch the group at feeding time to make sure every fish gets food, particularly when they share the aquarium with faster species. A varied diet, clean water and suitable companions are the best route to strong colour and long-term health.

These are actually the jet black tetras, so a slight variation to the ones with the noticeable blackline through the middle. great fish and health though.
