Cardinal Tetra XL (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a larger-grade Cardinal Tetra, prized for the bright blue stripe and full red colour running along the body.
Appearance and natural habitat
In a settled group the fish spend much of their time together in midwater, with short displays and changes of position giving the aquarium constant movement. Keeping enough of their own kind improves confidence, colour and natural social behaviour.
In the wild, this fish comes from the upper Orinoco and Rio Negro systems of South America. It is associated with soft, acidic forest streams shaded by overhanging vegetation and stained with natural tannins. Matching some of that shelter and maintaining stable water helps the fish settle; use the species-appropriate conditions shown below.
Cardinal Tetra XL care
- Adult size: about 5 cm
- Temperature: 23-29°C
- pH: 4.0-7.0
- Temperament: Peaceful community fish
- Group: At least 8; larger groups look best
- Care level: Easy to moderate
Aquarium setup
A mature, planted aquarium with shaded areas, dark substrate and open swimming space suits this species well. Stable, clean water is more important than chasing an exact number, although soft to moderately soft water brings out the best colour.
Use an established filter and introduce the fish only after the aquarium is fully cycled. Regular partial water changes and steady conditions are safer than sudden attempts to adjust pH or hardness.
Feeding and tank mates
Feeding: Offer fine flake or micro pellets plus small frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp.
Compatibility: Cardinals are peaceful schooling fish and should never be kept singly. The XL label describes the sale size, not a different species or different care requirement.
Watch the group at feeding time to make sure every fish gets food, particularly when they share the aquarium with faster species. A varied diet, clean water and suitable companions are the best route to strong colour and long-term health.
